name: Alessa Grey age: 18 alignment: Neutral city: Los Angeles powers: Fire mastery. Alessa can control and create fires of all sizes, though really large fires (larger than a house fire) are extremely difficult for her to control (she may pass out attempting to do so). When she learned to truly control her powers, she found that she was able to put out fires as well as start them. She cannot be burned by any kind of fire, natural or supernatural. |
| HISTORY; |
Alessa was born in LA and has lived there all her life. Her parents, like many people living in that area, were of fairly average means; thus, the family drifted from apartment to apartment in the city and its suburbs for most of Alessa's childhood, staying anywhere they could afford to. Despite the fact that both parents had to work full time to pay all their expenses (and even then, they couldn't pay them all sometimes), Alessa grew up in relative contentment until she was ten years old. Her powers manifested unexpectedly when she accidentally turned a candle flame into a gout of fire that ignited her bedroom and, then, the rest of the apartment. A neighbor called 911 when she saw the smoke and flames. The apartment itself was completely burned out, and both of Alessa's parents died in the fire. Alessa herself almost died from smoke inhalation. The paramedics noted the remarkable lack of any burns on the young girl or her clothing -- undoubtably a result of her abilities protecting her from their own effects. After recovering from the aftereffects of the fire, Alessa went to live with her grandmother, who also lived in LA. Though she knew that the fire had been her fault, she told no one, instead preferring to live with the guilt of causing her parents' death on her own. However, the day she caught her grandmother lighting a fire in her fireplace with nothing but a glance, she couldn't resist saying something about her powers. While talking with her grandmother, she discovered that the ability to manipulate fire was in fact an innate ability in the Grey family line, which only manifested in its female members -- explaining why Alessa's father didn't have such powers and why the fire was able to kill him. Still, Alessa never revealed to her grandmother that her powers had started the apartment fire, though she had a feeling that the older woman guessed it. It was also from her grandmother that she learned that she was predestined to fight in the war in 1999. At first, she didn't believe her grandmother -- a war over the fate of the world sounded like something out of a movie. But the woman seemed so serious and so certain of the truth of her words that Alessa didn't have much choice but to take her words to heart. They proved to be true eight years later, when she received an e-mail inviting her to a community for those whose destinies were foreordained. Alessa is still living with her grandmother, who owns a house in the northern part of Los Angeles proper. She is a senior at John Marshall High School and plans to attend UCLA once she graduates; she's already been accepted into the university and has a couple of good scholarships. She's still uncertain about how much the forthcoming war for the fate of Earth will impact her, but she knows she has an important role to play and tries her best to act accordingly. update ;; Following Julia's death, Alessa was certain that she could and would help the Seals in any way possible, going as far as to volunteer her aid on a post to the community. However, as time passed, she became less sure of herself. Her grandmother had insisted time and time again that she would be important in the great battle of 1999, but as barriers all over the world began going down, she wasn't sure that she even wanted to be a part of it. If she lived with a sense of guilt because of her parents' deaths, what would she do in the case that millions died because of her failures? In spite of her earlier conviction, she let her own fear take priority, and against her conscience, decided to let fate run its course. Alessa told herself that she was a neutral for a reason, not one of the Seals. They didn't need her anyway, and if they did, her offer still stood. With this 'justification', she left the community and tried to forget about it all, though she's now back after the recent destruction of two barriers. Currently, she's trying to live as normally as she can. However, she is much more subdued than before, and feels a constant sense of dread, no matter how much she tries not to think about it. |
| PERSONALITY; |
Alessa is usually a very friendly, outgoing young woman. She enjoys talking to people and makes friends easily, although admittedly, she spends more time talking to people on the Internet than in real life. She loves animals, especially cats (she has three) and hamsters (she has three of those, too). When not reading or playing video and computer games, she enjoys drawing, and is actually very good at it. There is a side to Alessa that she never shows anyone, and that's the side that still feels guilty over being responsible for her parents' death. Occasionally, she still has nightmares of the apartment fire. She is still a little nervous about using her powers offensively, fearing that she might someday lose control again and hurt someone she cares about. update ;; Julia's death has noticeably changed Alessa, who certainly isn't as perky as before. She had never been skilled at hiding her feelings, and though she tells others that she's enjoying life as much as ever, it's rather obvious to those around her that something has changed. She uses her old antics and habits to feign normalcy, but whether this to convince others or to convince herself, Alessa isn't sure. |
| APPEARANCE; |
Fair skin, chin-length reddish-brown hair and green eyes. Alessa's small height and slightly rounded face make her look younger than her eighteen years. She dresses in the usual outfits for young people her age -- usually jeans, T-shirts and sneakers. She is rarely seen without a smile on her face. |
